10 Tips for Reducing Expenses for Business Office Supplies

Using recycled office supplies, and less of them, can be one part of rewarding your business's triple bottom line by implementing effective environmental, social, and economic sustainability strategies. (See Sustainable Business Strategies — The Triple Bottom Line.)

Here are ten effective tips from Dolphin Blue for saving money on office supplies.

#1 Print on both sides of your paper. If your printer is not set up to do that with one pass, you can achieve the same result by simply flipping your stack of printed papers over to print the opposite side.

#2 Reset printer options. Set your print margins -- top, bottom, left, and right -- to be narrower than the default widths that are set by your word processing program. Avoid double-spacing to halve the amount of paper you use.

#3 Printing emails is usually unnecessary. Go paperless to save paper and reduce clutter in desks, filing cabinets, and storage boxes. Office space that is used to store unnecessary paper costs you.

#4 Pay bills online and store receipts digitally instead of printing them out.

#5 If you need to print orders that you place, print the order confirmation on the back side of your original order copy.

#6 A digital faxing service is like an email service for faxes. It's easy to send and receive faxes digitally, and paper usage is eliminated. If you search on "email fax service providers," you will find many providers listed and two good sites that evaluate numerous providers.

#7 If you do need to send faxes by using paper originals, use the opposite side of your last page for the cover sheet. After the cover sheet emerges, reverse it and add it to the stack.

#8 Waste paper can be shredded and used as packing material.

#9 Re-use cardboard boxes, cutting them down as needed.

#10 Make scratch pads out of scrap paper. Use a bit of card board, some paper printed only on one side, and a binder clip to hold everything together.

Recycle your used office supplies and buy products made from recycled materials. Recycling has no value in protecting the environment and preserving natural resources unless we buy products made from recycled materials.
