Five Organizations We Admire

In today’s media, there tends to be a greater emphasis on organizations involved with “bad” business practices rather than “good”. As a company that is deeply committed to providing only environmentally friendly products, we find it disheartening to continuously read about organizations that make profitability their number one priority. In light of the New Year, we would like to take this opportunity to recognize five organizations that work to benefit our planet and its inhabitants.

1.  American Sustainable Business Council

The first organization that makes our list is the American Sustainable Business Council. Co-founded by Ben Cohen of Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream, ASBC works to advance public policies to ensure a sustainable economy for current and future generations. In a recent CNN interview, Cohen proclaimed, “Letting the market determine the rules of the business world means there will be only one rule: The biggest guy with the deepest pockets wins”. This is among the many reasons why we support ASBC and its efforts in creating a sustainable and just marketplace.

 2. Patagonia

In a world of mass consumption, we are firm believers of the “less is more” statement made in Patagonia’s “Don’t Buy this Jacket” campaign. Released on Black Friday, the busiest shopping day in America, the advertisement asks readers to buy “pre-loved” Patagonia products through its “Common Threads Initiative” on eBay, instead of purchasing new apparel or gear. This anti-consumerist message not only stresses the need to reduce consumption, but also encourages consumers rethink their current spending habits.

3.  Texas Green Chamber of Commerce

We were delighted to learn about the Texas Green Chamber of Commerce, and become its first charter member in 2011. Unlike the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Texas Green Chamber supports sustainable development by promoting environmental and socially responsible public policy initiatives and business practices. Members of the Texas Green Chamber of Commerce believe in investing in people, and protecting our planet, all while creating long-term profits—a mission truly worth supporting.

4.  Greenling DFW

Eating local food and organic produce is important, and we could not be more thrilled to learn about Greenling coming to our neck of the woods. Unlike your typical grocer, Greenling delivers fresh produce to your front door, FREE of charge. All of the food provided by Greenling is also certified organic or local and sustainably produced. Greenling also works with over 50 local producers to provide fresh and organic foods, without the hefty price tag. Did we mention that Greenling only requires a $25 ordering minimum, and offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee? Not too shabby.

5.  Ben & Jerry's

When Occupy Wall Street burst into the mainstream media last year, few companies publicly endorsed the “anti-corporation” movement. Among the few (Dolphin Blue included) were Ben & Jerry’s Board of Directors, who not only issued a letter of support, but also gave out free ice-cream to OWS protesters. Despite the criticism Ben & Jerry’s has received in the past (“selling out” to Unilever), there are few large corporations and CEO’s bold enough to openly applaud the OWS movement, or scoop ice-cream for that matter.

In our eyes, the organizations within this list adhere to principles that more businesses ought to adopt. There are way too many organizations operating without taking into consideration their environmental or societal impact. That is why we feel it’s important to recognize those that are leaders in sustainability. Here’s to discovering more in 2012!
